February 5, 2019 marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Pig… the Earth Pig to be specific. It follows the New Moon once the Sun enters the Western Astrological Sign of Aquarius. It is a celebration of the coming of Spring; new life and new beginnings and traditionally aligns with other world cultures celebrating the end of Winter and the coming of Spring. This may be a little bias since the focus is on Northern Hemisphere weather, however, 88 percent of the world is in the Northern Hemisphere. For our friends in the lands down-under, they will be saying goodbye to Summer and welcoming Winter – sorry Southies, but I am really looking forward to Spring. In recent days we celebrated St. Brighid’s Day, Imbolc and Groundhog’s Day; all symbolizing the coming of Spring, the return of the Sun and life beneath the ground waking up from the Earth’s frozen clutch. The celebrations are meant to bring good luck and abundant prosperity and the honored animal of the year brings in with it its own set of vibrational energy and fortune. This year we celebrate the Pig.
Pigs symbolize good fortune, happiness, wealth and abundance. Their chubby little smiling faces are just waiting to be pinched. Pigs are pleasant, hard workers that also reward themselves for working hard. They do not complain, yet are rather grateful for what is presented to them and accept their blessings very well. This could be a wonderful shift of energy for those that do not have a shiny outlook on life at hand and tend to complain or have a lack mentality; one hopes that gratitude is found this year.
Not all those born under the Sign of the Pig are treated equally; that is why the Elemental portion of the “Year” is so important. Take for example the Metal Pigs born in 1971- they tend to be lazy, unmotivated and terrible at managing their money. That does not mean they cannot, it will just take focus and drive to do so. Water Pigs born in 1983 are very responsible and serious and usually can save their money very well. They are good communicators and accept advice from their loved ones. Wood Pigs from 1935 & 1995 are smooth sailors; they live off of love and rose colored glasses and will never waiver in the face of a crisis. Fire Pigs of 1947 & 2007 are very dependent on others. They prefer a daily routine. They are good savers and often choose rocky relationships for the sake of being taken care of. Then there are the Earth Pigs of 1959, they are the social butterflies of the Chinese Zodiac, they are happy go lucky, prosperous, generous and live a very joyful life; that is the energy that we are coming in to! Year of the Earth Pig entices us to get our homes and lives organized; time to clean up the mess. They seek out what makes them happy and comfortable. It is ironic that Pigs are associated with being messy as Pigs like clean and clutter-free spaces as they know that it will enhance the Chi (good energy) flow throughout every aspect of their lives. They do not over indulge, but treat the Self on occasion after adding to their nest egg.
Compatibility …..borrowed from chinesenewyear.net
Most compatible with Pig: Tiger, Rabbit, Goat
Pigs are the most compatible with Tigers. The brave Tiger gives Pigs the security they need.
The Rabbit will be attracted by the Pig’s intelligence and warmth. With the Goat, there are many common interests and topics.
Least compatible with Pig: Snake, Monkey
Pigs and Snakes have clashing personalities and are the least compatible. They have biases against each other and can’t compromise. It’s hard to get along with Monkeys as well. The relationship is full of tension.

In keeping with tradition, there are many taboos surrounding Chinese New Year and the Luck you wish to bring in. Cleanliness is key. Cleaning the home and the body and one’s belongings are necessary prior to the New Moon celebrations. Sweeping, and putting out the garbage in advance as this is not allowed once the Sun sets as you would want to lock in your good vibes and not take a chance of any of your luck leaving the home. Preparation of food in advance as knives and cutting tools are not used during celebrations as they symbolize the cutting of ties. No arguing, using harsh or negative words. Be extra careful not to break anything the week of the New Year as you may break your good luck streak to come. The New Moon in Aquarius at 15 degrees on February 4th brings us the coming together (again) of heart and mind to combine with the love that is available to us if we allow it. Very pragmatic is the Aquarian, riding the waves of the intellect versus the Ego. This Moon does not point the finger of blame, finds forgiveness in the self and the collective, there is an awakening of the mind and heart, an A-HA moment that allows one to see their role in the bigger picture of their circumstances. This is a time for new beginnings and the vibe I am picking up is one of a launch on the way towards bigger and better opportunities. Make your wishes as this one is important! Although Amethyst is the Stone for February, I feel compelled to use Red and Yellow colored crystals and stones to bring in the energy of the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Pig! Carnelian and Citrine will be the go-to stones during this week!
