Has Silverfish come slithering into your life and space? Are you as grossed out as I am? Well, I am here to tell you all about this disgusting little bug that is known to jump and slither like a fish through our moist bathrooms, up through our plumbing, in the books in our libraries where they will eat the pages of our favorite literary treasures.

When something catches my attention I pay attention to its behavior and preferred environment. I pay attention to the reaction my body makes when I encounter any animal. This particular creature made me feel disgust and dread; so gross. It made me think back to the last time I saw them during my young childhood, when I was not afraid of them, probably because I did not have anything to fear being so young. Funny how children have so many less inhibitions. Knowing Silverfish like dark, warm and damp areas makes me think of the Astrological Sign of Scorpio, so I may consider thinking of the symbolism behind Scorpio and its Ruling Planets of Mars and Pluto; the ability to stay hidden in the dark, ready to strike, it is warm, passionate, protective, volatile at times, secretive, explosive, caring, emotional; also symbolizing birth, death, change, transformation and rebirth. Next, knowing they can often be found inside of our books that are stored away in the garage (because they feed on the pulp of the pages), maybe they are looking for information, maybe they too like to read; either way, that speaks of the planet Mercury the Messenger; coincidentally, he happens to be Ruled by Gemini, the Twins and Quicksilver thinkers of the Zodiac, the Communicators and Mars is currently Stationed Retrograde in Gemini. There is a mutual reception between these two Signs and planets (at the time of this writing.) Let me also point out that Mercury is an element that acts like a liquid metal that is known as Quicksilver, a perfect analogy for the Silverfish. The Retrograde symbolizes something that needs to be revisited, gone back over and re-reviewed. There is possibly information that has been missed or glossed over previously. Either way, it seems that these Silverfish are asking me to pay attention to my leaking pipes in the bathroom, and explore the depths of my passion and emotions; time to prepare for some big changes, deaths, births, and transformations!
First and foremost, if there are Silverfish present, they show us that there is a problem somewhere in our lives and that we need to figure out a way to solve any problems that may have been ignored or procrastinated; decisive action is required.
Silverfish are one of the oldest living insects and they have had to adapt to a changing world; a change is required, an open mind for further learning; they move quickly, maybe also asking us to physically get moving in a new direction, or to move our bodies more. Change of the mind and soul are also a part of the Silverfish as they do have a deep spiritual connection that can ultimately bring new insight and inspiration.
Since Silverfish prefer living in the dark, it is possible that it is time to step out into the light and center stage; take a bold move to show off your work talents and accomplishments. If you have been spending too much time tucked away at home, it may be time to get out of the house, spend more time outdoors, or accept invitations with friends. Speaking of “accept”, I feel that part of being adaptable and flexible requires acceptance of the forthcoming changes.
Lastly, some consider seeing Silverfish as a bad Omen that brings financial turmoil, hardship and heartache, but only if you procrastinate, become too obstinate and refuse to address current situations.
To leave you all on a good note, one of my favorite bands wrote a song titled Silverfish and released February 1995 – I leave you with this video and lyrics.
Lyrics
Will I be the stranger in your movie?
Is there a place for me in the patterns
That glow on your skin and your clothes?
Hold him.
Hold his thin frame in your arms
When everything flows from his skin and his clothes.
I’m flying so over it.
Silverfish line his pocket.
Silver quick he leaves.
(I don’t want to know about your ill-fated love affair).
Flying so over it.
Flying so over your head.
Hold him,
When everything glows on his skin.
I’ve been much stranger.
I’ve watched you from afar.
Mow everything shows on my skin and my clothes.
I’m flying so over it.
Silverfish line his pocket.
Silver quick he leaves.
(I don’t want to hear about your poorly-timed rock career).
Flying so over it,
Flying so over your head.
