March 2023 is a monumental month for a shift in planetary energy. So many shifts will be occurring that I need to take it in bits, one by one. First up is the ingress of Saturn into Pisces ogn March 7, 2023. I have been avoiding writing writing about this particular transit because, truth be told, I have Saturn in Pisces in my Natal Chart, which also means that I will entering my second Saturn Return. Anyone that has lived passed the age of 30 has experienced at least one Saturn Return.
It typically begins around age 27 and completes by 30. This symbolizes a time in our lives when we go from childhood into adulthood. It is probably one of the most difficult times of our lives and I can only think of one person that went through unscathed, although, I think that person lied. Anywho, the second Saturn Return begins around age 57 and completes by age 60. This time around, it should be much easier as we have had 30 years of life’s lessons to grown. This is a graduation into maturation. However, not all have evolved and grown and may still have lessons and Karma to deal with. If this is the case, buyer beware, because Lord Saturn will be dishing out some discipline once again. If you don’t get this time around, you may struggle the remainder of your years and it could be painful. Saturn in Pisces really wants us to take a deep dive, do some intense soul searching. This can be a really beautiful transit or it could be gut wrenching.
Yesterday, I heard an Astrologer that I admire mention briefly the Myth of Sedna. I had never heard this one, the myth of the Inuit Girl of the Oceans and also the name of a powerful Asteroid near Orion, Taurus and the Pleiades. As the story goes, Sedna was extremely needy, always demanding of her Father. So much so that one night while he was sleeping, he awoke to find Sedna gnawing on his arm. He had to get rid of this parasite of a child, so he put her in a boat and rowed out into the depths of the ocean where he threw her overboard. Sedna clung to boat, so her Father chopped her fingers off. Sedna, not wanting to let go and be alone in the dark of the ocean used her arms to once again to try and climb into the boat; her Father chopped her arms off and away she floated and became the Girl of the Ocean, living in the depths of the dark waters with her greed, need and emotions. I totally paraphrased this myth, but it immediate made me think of Saturn (the Father) and Pisces (the ocean) and when we cling on to anything, especially sentimentality (12th House & Pisces) we will have our fingers chopped off and be forced (Saturn) to let go and grow. Yes, I know this is a brutal story, but coming from someone with Saturn in Pisces, that is what life and the first Saturn Return felt like. I am surprised I made it out alive; not kidding.
As I was pondering the approach of this transit, I looked at the other dates that Saturn was in Pisces (approximately every 27-30 years). Pisces can be quite beautiful as it has an artistic quality that is dreamy and intuitive which breadcrumbed me to Music. I was suddenly curious what type of music was created during the last Saturn in Pisces transit and if it would mirror the archetypes of this and sure enough it does! Beautiful, poetic, gut wrenching lyrics, belting ballads professing love and jealous and darkness. Love, betrayal, and angst of unrequited relationships. Each one reminding me of my first Saturn Return, the heartbreak that I was experiencing and the music that got me through it. Some of those songs I still have a hard time listening to, even though they are favorites of mine. For this analysis, I looked at music that was created from 1993-1996. None of the lists are all inclusive and we also have to consider the different genres, but I found the names of the songs and the names of the bands to fit the archetype of the time. My go tos were Nirvana’s Heartshaped Box, Cracker with Low, Gin Blossoms Jealousy, Mazzy Star’s Fade into You, Pearl Jam’s Go, Rearview Mirror, and Corduroy, Duran Duran’s Come Undone, The Breeders Cannonball off their Last Splash album, all of Belly’s album, Morphine’s Cure for Pain, The Cure, the Cranberries Linger, Snoop Dog’s Gin and Juice, Beck’s Loser, Tool’s Sober. These are only a sample from 1993, but really spell out Saturn in Pisces’ self-pity, martyrdom and tendencies to escape through drugs and alcohol. 1994-1996 do not disappoint either. 1994’s number 1 hit was TLC’s Waterfalls, 1995’s Wonderwall by Oasis, and wrapping up in 1996 with the Fugees Killing Me Softly. I would be remiss to not mention 1996 is the year that Rage Against the Machine came out with Bulls on Parade and Killing in the Name Of; two super empowering songs that helps us climb out of the depths of despair and reclaim our sanctity.
Why not explore the music of the times during Saturn in Pisces. Look for the genres that you love. These songs just may get you through this uncomfortable period. Here are the dates over the last 90 years:
