A Giant Silk Worm showed up in the garden on the eve of the Full Strawberry Moon in Sagittarius (conjuncting the Galactic Center) for the first time (to me). It took me a while to research exactly which particular species he is because I did not think that such a beautiful creature lived near me in the Mid Atlantic Region of the United States (Philadelphia Suburbs). Funny as it turns out that this Moth is also known as a Tulip Tree Silk Moth and my next door neighbor has four sixty year old Tulip Trees. So why is this the first time I am seeing one? For starters, Moths are masters of disguise and have evolved to camouflage themselves out in nature to protect themselves from predators.
Being this Full Moon is providing the energy to expand one’s mind and perception and shed Universal Truth and Wisdom, I felt that this was a Sign from the Heavens just for me.
Whenever I encounter a creature, I observe them closely, take pictures for future reference and think about what this animal message could mean to me. Knowing immediately a few facts about Moths in general;
- they have to ability to camouflage themselves in order to protect themselves from predators
- the are highly attracted to the light
- they begin as a caterpillar and cocoon themselves into a beautiful and painful transformation (the old form dying so the new form can be born)
- they are oddly beautiful
Then I set off to research the scientific information about a creature. I was intrigued to discover that Callosamia angulifera, made me think of Angels and its family name of Saturniidae or a Saturniid made me think of the Planet Saturn and how it is Kronos (Father Time), the Karma Police, the Authoritarian; it made me stand up straight and pay attention. I observed the photos that I had taken. The check marks say “make sure everything checks out”, make a to-do list, make sure all one task is complete before moving on to another. I blew gently on his closed wings to that I could admire his beauty and see all his detail. The scallops on the lower wings look like little skulls (although it is hard to see that from my photos). His body and legs look spider like, indicating creativity and the birthing of ideas; the antennae reminiscent of tiny feathers, sensing and feeling the vibrations around him. Back to the spider body, immediately told me to be cautious as this could be a poisonous species and I was correct about that as those hairs carry toxins and barbs that hook and sting, releasing its poison which can cause intense itching, intense pain and in its caterpillar form the stings can cause death.
So great, how does this message apply to me, what is going on in my life or what is coming up that I need to pay attention to? That is the key question whenever we encounter any animal and the Totem or Spirit message that it is sending to us. If Moth has flown into your dream it is generally a notice for you to pay attention to the minor details and take care not to overlook things. It may also be suggesting that some unseen irritation may not surface until it is too late. Alternatively the Moth could symbolize your weaknesses, character flaws and the fragile state you are currently in. It is putting you on notice that you need to step back and take time to heal before moving forward.
