I am surprised that I have never written about this sweet little snowbird that migrates in each Winter and signals a change in the Seasons, especially when a pair of them never left last Summer and this Winter shows a lower flock than usual. However, yesterday, one sweet and very tiny one flitted about in the tree branches as my circle of friends celebrated a recently passed friend’s birthday in an Aya Despacho Ceremony (Shamanic Funeral). We all saw her and immediately thought that it was the Spirit of our friend popping in to observe and say hello. You know it is said that all birds are the messengers of the Angels themselves!
This prompted me to explore the meaning of this Totem and the first definition that stood out to me is that the Dark Eyed Junco symbolizes the Freedom of the Spirit, just as my friend’s Spirit is now free; free to fly and explore. The Junco also symbolizes Winter and a time of rest, death, rejuvenation and transformation. The Junco also symbolizes Truth and being able to see another’s Truth without judgment. Finding and attracting others who are like minded and can understand our personal Truth for the highest good of all involved.
I always pay attention to birds as they each have a specific message for us in addition to them being a beauty and pleasure to watch. Their behavior and habits, like animal totems, all show us certain qualities that we need to incorporate into our own lives.
From the Finch family and common to North America, they come in a variety of colors, they can be quite chatty with little cheeps and are typically ground feeders.
Borrowed and sharing from the Aunty Flo site, here is a small list of the qualities we can incorporate should we cross paths with the Dark Eyed Junco:
