I picture myself laying in a field of wild flowers, the wind blowing on my warm, sun filled face; I can hear the birds tweeting and the animals scampering- there is a cool stream running along side of me where I have a beautiful picnic of fruits, cheeses, bread and wine…….(screech….) that is my dream – not my reality. I am sitting indoors at a desk during my lunch hour wishing that I was dancing around a May Pole in my cool stream, flower field vision; my wishes sometimes become my reality, usually only while on holiday or the weekend, but one must dream for those wishes to come true!
Summer Solstice, Mid-Summer or Litha occurs on June 21st and this year precisely at 12:24 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. It is the longest day of the year in terms of the amount of sunlight we receive and when the Sun seems to stand still in the sky for just a moment ; its zenith does not move over the Tropic of Cancer and then it reverses it’s direction and begins its journey back south once again toward the Tropic of Capricorn, where it will reach the southernmost point on December 21st, or the Winter Solstice (the shortest day), only to hover and reverse again.
So, what are my plans for the Solstice? I feel like this is a week full of festivities. We have the Sun exiting my natal sign of Gemini, entering my 0 degree Rising Sign of Cancer on June 20th, hours later the Solstice occurs..will I be outside at 12:24 a.m. lighting my bonfire, heck no, I will be snug as a bug in a rug… I would like to set my intentions though, which may just include me lighting candles, scenting my home with fresh Lemon and Lavender, flowers from my garden to decorate my doors and my home, working in the garden and a fresh new hair cut this evening. Intention is the key and my intentions for this Summer is to bring more balance into my life. Eating well, getting plenty of rest and exercise outdoors; basking in all that is Summer. I am also feeling the need to clear out and align my Chakras, meditate more and keep my mind and aura clear. I feel as though I have not been as connected with my Tribe as I used to be (I can be a bit of a Hermit in the Winter), therefore, I would like to make time for friends again.
Litha, the Goddess is celebrated and this excerpt from goddess and greenman.com gives some beautiful suggestions for how to celebrate with a Honey Cake and a Moon Bowl Charm that we could all do this or tomorrow evening:
Moon Bowl Charm
A full moon charm to enhance your natural radiance to celebrate the beauty of Midsummer.
You will need: A glass or china bowl, a glass or china jug and a small white candle. Remember the candle needs to burn away completely so choose a small one.
Draw your water into the jug – rainwater is best, but fresh water from the tap is fine. Take the jug of water, the bowl and the small white candle outside and place them on the ground. Light the candle in a suitable holder and place it at the top of the bowl – at the midnight/noon point of a clock face. Pour the water into the centre of the bowl and say:
“Renewing water shining bright
Weave your charm in my bowl of Light”
Place your Moon Bowl in the moonlight so the light of the full moon is reflected in the water and leave the candle to burn down.
When this is complete take your bowl and dip your hands into the water and as you gently splash the moon water onto your face say
“By Full Moon charm,
By Full Moon light,
May inner beauty shine through tonight.
Brightest Blessings of the Goddess shine through me.”
When you have finished, return the water to the Earth. I always pour it on my favorite Holly Tree.
Whatever you choose to do, set your bright intensions on increasing the light in your life daily. It is the little things that we do for ourselves and our space that make a world of difference.
